NW County

Five of our Historic Markers are located in the Northern and Western parts of Limestone County. These four markers are identified as follows:

  • Elkmont, Alabama  ---  Tenn. & Ala Central Railroad
    • This marker is located in Elkmont north of the Depot and adjacent to remains of the railroad bed that is now “Rails To Trails”.
       
  • Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle (War between the States)
    • This marker is located on the right side of Alabama Highway 127 about 7.7 miles north of Athens.
       
  • Abner Alloway Strange, Jr (1761-1835). Veteran of the American Revolution
    • This marker is located on the right side of Alabama Highway 99, north west of Athens about 300 yards before reaching the Buck Island Bridge over Elk River.
       
  • Fort Hampton
    • This marker is located about 13 miles west of Athens on U.S. Highway 72 at the entrance of Fort Hampton Farms. The actual site is about 1/4 mile north of the Marker.
       
  • Lucy’s Branch and Little Elk Community
    • This marker is located near Wheeler Lake about 14 miles west of Athens on Snake Road and about 2 miles south of U.S. Highway 72 just before crossing the Elk River.
